By default, Windows Operating System doesn’t allow the users to create a folder with its name starting with a dot(.). Also, if you try to create a folder name ending dot(.), then windows automatically remove the dot(.) at the end of the folder name and create the folder.
dot(.) is allowed in the folder names only if it has at least one character before and after.
Do not end a file or directory name with space or a period. Although the underlying file system may support such names, the Windows shell and user interface does not. However, it is acceptable to specify a period as the first character of a name. For example, “.temp”. – Microsoft
Because the Windows system is considering the name starting with a dot(.) as a file extension. Hence, If you try to create, then Windows will display the below error.
But using Windows Command Prompt you can able to create a folder with the name starting with a dot(.)
How To Create Folder Name Starting with a dot(.) in Windows:
The below steps can be applied on all the Windows Versions and it works.
Step 1: Open Command Prompt in Windows. Open Run window [Windows key + R] and type cmd and hit Enter. or Press Windows Key + X and Open Command Prompt.
Step 2: Now navigate to the path in which you want to create the folder name starting with a dot(.).
Step 3: Now type mkdir<space>.FolderName
Eg: mkdir .AUTechTips
This command will create the folder with name .AUTechTips in the path as shown in the screenshot.
