Interesting Facts about Microsoft Notepad

Notepad application for windows is a simple text editor which was included in all versions of Microsoft Windows since Windows 1.0. Notepad is a simple tool to create documents, but with fewer functions. Even though it doesn’t have many styling and formatting options, still many of us using this program to take a quick note, developing the web pages and also for many other occasions.

I have made this post to know more about this simple tool, which we are using for more than 3 decades now. Here are the interesting and lesser-known facts about the Microsoft Notepad Application.

Interesting Facts About Microsoft Notepad Application:

  • Microsoft Notepad was written by Richard Brodie.
  • It was first released as a mouse-based MS-DOS program in 1983, which is 36 years ago.
  • After 1983, It has been included in all versions of Microsoft Windows since Windows 1.0 in 1985.

  • Notepad uses a built-in window class named EDIT, in all versions of Windows.
  • Till Windows 95, Fixedsys was the only available display font for Notepad.
  • In Windows NT 4.0 and 98, Microsoft introduced the ability to change the font in Notepad.
  • In Windows 2000, the default font was changed to Lucida Console.
  • In Windows 8, the default font in notepad was changed to Consolas.

  • Till Windows Me version, there were almost no keyboard shortcuts and no line-counting feature.
  • From Windows 2000, shortcuts for common tasks like new, open and save were added to the application.
  • Notepad also has a simple built-in logging function. Each time a file that starts with .LOG extension is open, the program inserts a text timestamp on the last line of the file.
  • In notepad, the resulting files are typically saved with the .txt extension.
  • Microsoft Notepad supports both left-to-right and right-to-left based languages.
  • Due to the operating system limit of the EDIT window class, the Notepad version in Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.11 could not open files larger than 54 KB.
  • The file size limit was extended to 64 KB in Windows 95 (and remained the same in Windows 98 and Windows Me).
  • In Windows 8.1 the Notepad application is able to open files at least as large as 512 MB.
  • In the Windows NT-based versions of Windows, Notepad can edit traditional 8-bit text files as well as Unicode text files.
  • Formatted text can be temporarily pasted into Notepad, and then immediately copied again in stripped format to paste into the other program.
  • Notepad does not require a lock on the file it opens, so it can open files already opened by other processes, users, or computers, whereas WordPad cannot.
  • The most common use for Notepad is to view or edit text (.txt) files.
  • The users find Notepad as a simple tool for creating Web pages.
  • There is run command available by default. When you type notepad in the run window, it opens notepad application.

  • The latest stable release of Notepad is version 10.0.18362.116 released on May 19th, 2019.
